@thatguyoverthere pre-christian societies usually did that - or some practical thing.
And in Germany the age for when a child has to go to school is determined by their ability to touch their opposing hands' ears with their arms over their head [tho not later than their 7th birthday]...
@Hyolobrika@kkarhan true. The good news is that most adolescents want to leave the nest so they are probably unlikely to fake a fail. Especially if the incentives of adulthood are enticing enough.
There is no one size fits all approach, but using aptitude/competency indicators rather than picking a date seems more likely to leave people better prepared. Obviously there is more at play like home and community need to be positive forces in a child's life, but one thing I have come to realize in my years is that 18 years of age is not always an adult. Some people take 20-25 years to ripen, some maybe longer. There are also people who realistically could be granted adult status a bit earlier. My oldest cousin was like that. We recognize this by setting different dates for what things you are allowed to do as an adult. Fight for your country? We'll figure out ways to sign you up while you are 17. Drink a beer. Eh sorry that's for adults. Buy a gun? Well that depends... Rifles at 18, but no pistols until 21. When a person is an adult they should be granted full adult status, but I do not think a single age is appropriate for everyone.
@kkarhan@Hyolobrika yeah I think competency tests are a good thing, but when the state is in control of licensing they can take your access away for other unrelated reasons (ex possession of illicit substance) or just be a disorganized mess and make acquiring a license more about following administrative procedure than making sure you are actually competent/proficient. I think these things should fall on parents and maybe be part of the process of ensuring you are releasing an adult into society. Like maybe up until you are an adult your parents can decide when you can drive but you fuck up and its on them.
Custodian can override parts but even then one must be very spechal as a 16yr old to fatally intoxicate with beer and wine alone.
Personally, I think some stuff should have licensing [i.e. driving vehicles] or at least a basic safety and proficiency test [i.e. like the required test for any gun permit in Germany]...
@kkarhan@Hyolobrika yeah mental health being a barrier to firearms ownership almost makes sense on some levels, but again the problem is a centralized authority on which conditions might make a person unsuitable to carry a firearm is a problem, and I think making losing access to firearms a consequence of seeking help seems counterproductive. I think it's more likely for people to avoid seeking help if there is a risk for them to be diagnosed with something that reduces their freedoms.
Like: People get denied permits for having seeked mental healthcare BUT a neonazi illegally owning a submachine gun got fined AND explicitly not have that recorded so that they won't get red-flagged for any permit application in the future is just bad.
@ResidentEvil Oh I don't think "experts" need to be involved. I actually think such a thing would need to be more communal and decentralized not a top down one size fits all standardized test or anything like that.
@thatguyoverthere I suppose, such test can be provided before the age of an adulthood: if you are a teenager ready to do adult things, you can get through the test and become "de jure" an adult. Otherwise, if becoming an adult needs mandatoey tests, we'll find ourselves in situation, in which the vast majority of grown men and women considered children and denied autonomy because of some experts manipulating with such quizes.
@kkarhan@Hyolobrika I don't really get into the whole left/right thing, but here in America the trend has been left leaning for a while. Honestly my opinion is that most humans on the left and right agree on some things and disagree on others, but media and money hungry political parties create tension between groups by highlighting the differences instead of the similarities, and framing "the opposition" as monsters in just about every case. The real divide is not left/right or rich/poor. It's power and subject. My opinion is that power should be distributed rather than centralized, but this is often considered a far right position because it means not letting a central government beat everyone up for not conforming. The argument for centralized control is something like we need to be sure that everyone gets a fair shake and aren't disadvantaged by their location, but I'll be damned if I've ever seen any law fairly executed. The federal government is full of perverts that bumped elbows (and probably other parts) with the likes of Jeffrey Epstein. They get private protection while arguing to reduce access to firearms for regular people. The only time they seem to suffer from their crimes is when it's politically advantageous for their enemies that their crimes be exposed. Meanwhile they decide which plants you can grow, process, store, trade, and consume, whether or not you are able to travel (and to where), whether you are authorized to protect yourself, and many aspects of life.
@thatguyoverthere@Hyolobrika this - coupled with an extreme political bias favouring right-extreme and cops and disadvantaging left-progressive, law-abiding civilians is what got Germany the biggest black market for guns in the world.
Which is absurd considering we live in the Post-Luty & Post-FGC9 era where it's literally impossible to enforce any gun control whatsoever.
The system creates a false & ableist bias against those actually seeking help and also violates the trust and professionalism healthcare professionals need.
Whereas violent reactionaries loving "population exchange" conspiracy theories won't get their "professionalism" and "integrity" questioned unless they were stupid enough to scream the quiet parts out loud to the point that it's impossible to ignore for the cops.
@thatguyoverthere@Hyolobrika I just stick with the laws despite thinking they ain't good because not only do I not want to provide reactionary facists with propagandistic ammo to use against me and others, but because it would be very much impossible to advocate meaningfully from jail.
The stats however show me that guns ain't the issue, but people doing violence to people and society as well as media rewarding them with attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3VQULyT390
@Hyolobrika@ResidentEvil I would imagine family and possibly the community they belong to could work that out. I think this type of thing could only really work if there was less central authority.
