I’ll get a bat, or a frying pan to defend myself!” that they can only lie and pretend to be cool w/ dying.
In reality they’re comfy playing this way because they think they’ll never, ever actually face an untimely death. People like this become gibbering animals or frozen statues when they do see it tho

practice your action, a lot
People dont’ respect pump guns enough, they’re probably the hardest gun for an unpracticed shooter to operate under life and death stress

Buy the dummy spring loads, like a dozen, and learn how to reload it from diff. positions, practice your grab and go moves, have drills where you ready it in the dark and sweep the house with it
(be careful when ejecting dummies, they’re heavy and they’ll bash the shit out of the walls)
I used to see the “pros” constantly, endlessly screw up with a shotgun, and they were the active, “good” SWAT teams supposedly on their game. It’s very common to get adrenaline up and pump too fast, not going all the way and picking up another round. Also fumbling reloads in between rounds, very easy when you’re shaky.
I don’t like shotguns because of that, you’re stuck counting on the idea you can stop a thread with the same number of rounds you’d have in a revolver, but everyone assumes you’ll always make contact with each and you’ll ALWAYS go bang when you pull the trigger.
Meanwhile, I’d regularly see the guys paid to shoot get their HR up and do the old “bang!-Click-‘Fuck’-rack-Bang!” dance
