@branman65@Groomschild@Paultron@bleedingphoenix@SuperSnekFriend Given the fact there are many strip mall churches it really doesn't matter what form the building is in if it has four walls and a roof. The traditional form of the church building developed over time and isn't required, just what was the most common form chosen to construct for various reasons.
@Groomschild@Paultron@branman65@bleedingphoenix@SuperSnekFriend The idea that there was a mass destruction of all the old shrines at one moment is kind of ridiculous tbh. Also in a pre-printing press world such details as to what happened to the various holy places of the pagans would be lost to time. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if many of them became churches and the original pagan structure was lost over time.
@branman65@bleedingphoenix@SuperSnekFriend I've had thoughts at times what would happen to al those Shinto shrines and temples if Japan were to truly become Christian. They're beautiful works of art and architecture. But can you truly separate them from their former religious context? Can you make (what is an objectively a pro-social thing) summer festivals and new years visits at the local shrine take on a new innocuous meaning post-shinto? This has happened to some extent in Europe with harmless cultural practices (eg. Christmas trees) of the prior pagan ways retrofitted into a Christian context, same with some temples such as the Pantheon being preserved and converted into churches. But what of Japan?
@wgiwf@branman65@bleedingphoenix@SuperSnekFriend i don't even think the people of japan at large even connect shrines and temples with actual shinto religion concepts. it's more of a cultural institution with followers being definitely in the minority and average japs just seeing it as a cultural treasure and a nice park
@bleedingphoenix@SuperSnekFriend I now see why the Japanese like to use the Catholic Church as some magical organization when it comes to anime. To one with no understanding of the theology and principles behind it, the Transubstantiation of the Eucharist seems like some sort of conjuring to them that they can interpret as magical in some way. The whole order of exorcists is right up their alley as well, reminding them of the Shinto version of it.
