@DW2 It's a simple consequence of the fact that the US pioneered or was a very, very early adopter of virtually all modern technology. We had to suffer all the growing pains and all the patchwork iterations, make a bunch of standards work together, etc.
Then once we got the bugs sorted out and developed the technology to a high level, all these little countries got consistent, high end, turnkey solutions built for them without ever having to do anything but write a check to some German, Chinese, or Japanese contractor.
