I think even FOSS dev are still pretty much elite with luxury of free time and owner of skills on high demand.
Sure they aren't quite as valued as what they really bring to the table - but still, they are highly regarded in their own small communities ; if not as heroes, as the good guys doing the right thing.
When the whole production of IT hardware is only saw as a "meh, too bad it's hurting it's workers, next !".
