@mushroom_soup @Inginsub @cassidyclown cc @Kirino also I guess @ceo_of_monoeye_dating @ai it's an amusing question
> energy transferred to the guys
the thing is. an abrupt velocity change due to energy transfer is what happens when you fall 50 feet and land on pavement :cirno_heh:
also it's not just the subjects. if the energy is transferred from the train then it's the equivalent of the train running into whatever it throws. if it's heavy enough I guess it would destroy the train
of course you've already got a spatial discontinuity and probably a gravitational potential one as well so you could just go ahead and suppose that there's also a discontinuity in velocity and momentum relative to their surroundings. that part works well enough I guess
but that makes the physics violations even worse than before. previously you were "only" violating energy due to gravitational potential now there's even more stuff being broken. it's digging a deeper hole
honestly I like my exploding/evaporating version of portal physics it seems to avoid these sorts of issues
> push the air out of the way on the front
this is the other problem here. if you go with the "plop" scenario there's stuff going through but the other side isn't moving so the new stuff constantly has to displace the old stuff. so when the portal is crossing the second person the first person is still in the way and has to get shoved out of the way. and then that happens again. so it's as though the people are being thrown against each other at whatever speed the portal is moving
so I think it would be sort of like (exactly the opposite of) newton's cradle (video attached). they wouldn't *all* go flying. the last one through would plop but the others would get thrown by whoever came after them. and it still isn't clear how energy is transferred between the surface of the portal and the stuff it interacts with
