This is your yearly backup reminder.
Don't lose your shit. It happens easier than you think. I lost a 2TB drive a few years back with EVERYTHING.
fuck cloud backup.
i recommend you backup into three tiers:
TIER1
irreplaceable sensitive files (things that can doxx you)
3x DVD copies, 3x BD-R copies, 3x HDD offline copies, 1xSSD offline copy, 1x live copy on NAS.
stored in leadlined steel safe
TIER2
irreplacable rare non-sensitive files (everything you know you will never find again)
3x DVD copies, 3x BD-R copies, 3x HDD offline copies, 1xSSD offlline copy, 1x live copy on NAS
stored in leadlined steel safe
TIER3.
nice to have backups of widely available content (OS ISOs etc)
1x DVD copies, 1x BD-R copies, 1x HDD offline copies, 1xSSD offline copy, 1x live copy on NAS.
- you can fit files easily onto multiple DVD or BD-R by splitting volumes into certain sizes with 7zip etc.
- use disc/disk cataloguing software to easily search for anything.
- with exception of large photos and videos, this is easily done for TIER 1.
- optical media can survive a solar flare. hdd and ssd are both fucked
- HDDs and SSDs all fail. good quality DVD or BD-R are near immortal.
