that's what this comes down to, culturally. fantasy is about a expression of truths and desires the author believes. older fantasy was about karmic justice and romanticism towards the world around it (see Gensokyo, Middle Earth, Narnia) whereas newer fantasy stews in the despair and darkness prevalent in the current world. it's a reflection of the contemporary world.
I was talking to a friend about science fiction recently, namely the depiction of the future. sci-fi futures used to be bright and full of wonder at where science could take us, and now grimdarkness and post-apocalyptic is the primary mode of those stories. niggas are miserable, basically.
